Lighting Integration – An afterthought ?

Is lighting often an afterthought? While there is growing awareness about the importance of lighting design and its impact on spaces, the delayed involvement of lighting designers often leads to compromised outcomes.

As a lighting consultant, if possible I advocate for being involved from the conceptual planning stage of any project mainly because early involvement ensures that the design evolution accommodates appropriate lighting installations. Although making architectural design decisions is not within the purview, to suggest design tweaks and modifications to integrate lighting seamlessly with the architecture, resulting in better overall possibilities.

Timely involvement in the design process determines whether light enhances the forms of architecture or becomes just a defining element itself.

Delayed involvement restricts one to suggesting light fixtures & technicalities, while early collaboration allows us to shape the desired lighting effect. Whether it’s narrative lighting, experiential lighting, communicative facades, or lighting spaces, the key to achieving impactful results is integrating lighting at the right time.
